Problem :

When I joined the company, one of the major challenges was employee engagement across departments. For instance, during the previous Men’s Day, a cricket tournament was planned but later dropped due to the large employee base and lack of experience in managing outdoor events. This left a gap in cross-department bonding. My first assignment was to turn this idea into reality, using cricket as a way to break silos and get employees talking to each other beyond work.

Solution :

Having prior experience in event management, I took on the challenge of hosting our company’s first large-scale cricket tournament. I structured it with 8 teams, each managed by team owners, and introduced a player auction system with three categories: Pro, Intermediate, and Beginner. To make it exciting and transparent, we live-streamed the auction on YouTube:

This format not only made the process fair but also gave employees a sense of ownership and involvement from the start.

Challenge :

The execution came with its share of hurdles—building a database of players and mapping their playing styles, securing the turf in advance, and getting custom jerseys designed for 8 teams. Ensuring women’s participation through inclusive game rules was crucial, as was handling logistics like trophies, game equipment, umpires, scorers, food, and refreshments. Each detail needed attention to make the tournament smooth and enjoyable.

Summary :

The event turned out to be a huge success with 100% participation. Employees connected across departments, many discovered hidden talents within their colleagues, and the energy it created set a new benchmark. What started as a one-time experiment has now become an official annual company event.
